Alexandroupolis located in Thrace is the capital of the prefecture of Evros and is the seat of the Medical School of the Democritus University. She is one of the newest cities in the country, which was founded in 1875. Alexandroupolis has a population of about 70,000 inhabitants. This beautiful seaside city, whose trademark is the lighthouse, forms the centre of a truly fascinating region.
The first inhabitants in the mid-19th Century were a few fishermen and the city began to grow, as the first railway line was laid in 1870. This was the first link Thessaloniki with Constantinople and the ability to export products from the rest of the country.
The city of Alexandroupolis currently holds the dominant position in the geographic area of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It is one of the main transport hubs, by all means, air, rail, road and sea and is also the main gateway between the countries of the European Union and Asia.
Alexandroupolis is a modern city with rapid economic growth. Attractions in the city include the church museum with its terrain, the Historical Folk Museum, the Flora and Fauna Museum of Evros.
Several hotels and a large campground on the beach that stretches for miles are waiting for the visitors. During summer months, many events are organized in the Egnatia Park with its open-air theater.
Alexandroupolis is the starting point for visits to the interior landscape and the island of Samothrace.
